Gozo Channel Launches Tender for Fourth Vessel
Gozo’s Ferry Future: Channel Launches Tender for Fourth Vessel
Imagine standing on the bustling Xlendi seafront, the salty Mediterranean breeze in your hair, and watching as the current Gozo Channel ferries, the ‘RoRo 4’ and ‘RoRo 5’, make their way across the azure waters. Now, picture a fourth vessel joining them, ready to ease the island’s traffic woes and boost connectivity. That future is one step closer, as Gozo Channel has just issued a call for tender to lease a new ferry.
Why a Fourth Vessel?
Gozo, Malta’s sister island, has long struggled with peak-hour traffic congestion at its ferry terminals. The current vessels, while efficient, often can’t keep up with the demand, especially during peak tourist season. Enter the fourth vessel, a potential breakthrough set to double the channel’s capacity, reducing waiting times and welcoming more visitors to the island.
But why lease, you ask? Well, it’s a practical solution that allows Gozo Channel to meet immediate needs without the hefty price tag of purchasing a new vessel outright. It’s a smart move that keeps the channel’s finances afloat, much like the traditional Maltese ‘dgħajsa’ boats that navigate the Grand Harbour’s waters.
What’s Next? Who’s Interested?
The tender, launched on the 1st of July, seeks a vessel of at least 100 metres in length, capable of carrying around 1,500 passengers and 100 vehicles. Interested parties have until the 15th of September to submit their bids. So far, whispers from the industry suggest several international companies are considering throwing their hats into the ring.
But it’s not just about the numbers. The successful bidder will also need to prove their environmental credentials, with low emissions and fuel efficiency high on the list of priorities. After all, Malta’s commitment to a greener future is no secret, with the island aiming to be carbon neutral by 2050.
Once the lease is secured, the new vessel is expected to start operations in late 2023, just in time for the peak tourist season. It’s an exciting development that promises to transform Gozo’s ferry scene, making life easier for residents and visitors alike.
