Gżira Scaffolding Collapse: Heavy Machinery to Blame
Scaffolding Collapse in Gżira: Heavy Machinery Blamed
Gżira’s quiet residential street, Triq San Gorg, was shattered by a sudden crash on Tuesday morning. A towering scaffolding, unable to withstand the strain of heavy machinery, came crashing down, causing panic and minor injuries among residents. The incident has sparked questions about safety protocols and the use of heavy machinery in urban areas.
Witness Accounts: A Scene of Chaos
Maria, a resident of Triq San Gorg, recounted the scene from her balcony. “I heard this loud creaking sound, then everything just came crashing down. It was like a scene from a disaster movie. Dust everywhere, people screaming. It was terrifying,” she said, her voice still shaky.
Another resident, Joseph, who was working from home, rushed out to help. “I saw the scaffolding lean, then it was just a cascade of metal and wood. I’m just glad no one was seriously hurt,” he said, surveying the damage from behind the police tape.
Investigation Underway: Heavy Machinery in the Spotlight
The incident has led to an investigation by the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA). Preliminary reports suggest that the scaffolding was overloaded with heavy machinery, exceeding its safe working load. This, combined with the strong winds that day, proved to be too much for the structure to bear.
OHSA has since issued a statement reminding contractors of to safety guidelines, especially when using heavy machinery. They have also called for regular inspections of scaffolding to ensure their safety and stability.
This is not the first time heavy machinery has been blamed for such incidents. In 2019, a similar incident in Birkirkara resulted in significant property damage. These incidents have led to calls for stricter enforcement of safety regulations and better coordination between contractors and local councils.
Councillor for Gżira, Joe Saliba, has promised a thorough review of the incident. “We need to ensure that such incidents do not happen again. The safety of our residents is our top priority,” he said.
In the meantime, residents of Triq San Gorg are left to pick up the pieces, both literally and metaphorically. They are calling for better communication from contractors about any potential risks and disruptions caused by heavy machinery.
