KM Malta Airlines’ Missing Accounts Raise Eyebrows

Unanswered Questions Surround KM Malta Airlines’ Accounts

Tucked away in the bustling streets of Triq il-Mara, Malta’s Companies Registry, a quiet storm has been brewing. The absence of audited accounts for KM Malta Airlines, a subsidiary of the state-owned Malta Mediterranean Link (MML), has raised eyebrows and sparked questions. Momentum, a local activist group, is at the forefront of this query, demanding transparency and accountability.

Accounts: A No-Show

According to the Companies Act, every company registered in Malta must file its annual return and audited accounts with the Registrar of Companies. Yet, KM Malta Airlines’ accounts have been notably absent since 2019. This anomaly has not gone unnoticed, with Momentum leading the charge in questioning the airline’s financial health and the government’s role in its operations.

“We’re not asking for the moon,” says Mark Camilleri, a spokesperson for Momentum. “We’re simply asking for the airline to adhere to the same financial transparency standards as any other company in Malta. The lack of audited accounts raises serious questions about what KM Malta Airlines is hiding.”

Government Response: Vague and Evasive

The government’s response to these queries has been vague at best. Minister for Tourism and Consumer Protection, Clayton Bartolo, has repeatedly deflected questions, stating that the airline’s financials are a matter for MML, its parent company. However, MML, a government entity, has remained tight-lipped, offering no concrete explanation for the missing accounts.

In a recent parliamentary session, Bartolo stated, “The government is committed to transparency. However, the financials of KM Malta Airlines are a complex matter that requires careful consideration.” When pressed further, he offered no timeline for when the accounts would be made public.

Meanwhile, KM Malta Airlines continues to operate, flying passengers to and from Malta’s airports. Yet, the lack of transparency around its financial health has left many questioning the government’s commitment to accountability and good governance.

As the debate around KM Malta Airlines’ accounts continues to simmer, one thing is clear: the people of Malta deserve answers. The government must step up and provide concrete explanations for the airline’s financial opacity. After all, it’s the taxpayers’ money on the line, and they have a right to know how it’s being spent.
