Malta’s First Floating Padel Court: A Barge in Marsa?

Barging In: A Padel Court Afloat in Marsa?

Imagine this: a padel court, not on solid ground, but bobbing gently on the waves in Marsa. It’s not a mirage, but a proposal submitted by a local ship repair company. The company, which prefers to remain anonymous for now, has applied to the Malta Maritime Authority for a permit to install a padel court on a barge in the Marsamxett Harbour.

Why a Padel Court on a Barge?

The company, in their application, cited the increasing demand for padel courts in Malta and the scarcity of available land as their primary motivations. They believe that a floating padel court could provide a unique and innovative solution to this issue. The barge, they propose, would be anchored in a designated area of the harbour, making it easily accessible by boat or even on foot at low tide.

“We’re thinking outside the box here,” a spokesperson for the company told Hot Malta. “Malta is an island, so why not make the most of our coastline? A floating padel court could be a fun and unique experience for players.”

Not Everyone’s Racket

While some are excited about the prospect of a floating sports facility, not everyone is serving up aces for the idea. Environmentalists have raised concerns about the potential impact on marine life and the harbour’s ecosystem. “We need to consider the environmental implications,” said a spokesperson for an environmental NGO. “A barge could disrupt marine life and potentially cause pollution if not properly maintained.”

Others have questioned the practicality of the proposal. “What happens in bad weather?” asked a local boat owner. “And who’s responsible if someone falls in?”

What’s Next?

The Malta Maritime Authority is currently reviewing the application. They will consider factors such as environmental impact, safety, and navigational concerns before making a decision. The company, meanwhile, is confident that their proposal could be a breakthrough for padel enthusiasts in Malta.

“We’re not trying to disrupt the status quo,” the spokesperson said. “We just want to offer something different, something unique. We believe Malta is ready for a floating padel court.”
