Malta’s Kenyan Community in Mourning: 16 Schoolgirls Lost in Tragic Fire
In the heart of Msida, Malta’s Kenyan community is in mourning. The news from home has hit hard – 16 schoolgirls, their lives snuffed out in a suspected arson attack at their boarding school in Kenya. The girls, aged between 14 and 18, were asleep when the fire engulfed their dormitory at Kakamega Girls High School on Thursday night.
Malta’s Kenyan Community United in Grief
Malta’s Kenyan community, numbering around 200, has been left reeling. Many gathered at the Kenyan Embassy in Msida, their faces etched with grief and disbelief. “We are all family here,” said John Omondi, a long-time resident of Malta. “When something like this happens back home, it’s like a part of us is lost too.”
The Maltese government has been swift to offer its condolences. “Our hearts go out to the families of the girls who lost their lives,” said Minister for Foreign Affairs, Evarist Bartolo. “Malta stands in solidarity with Kenya during this difficult time.”
Remembering the Girls: A Fundraiser in Msida
In response to the tragedy, the Kenyan community in Malta is organizing a fundraiser this Sunday at the Msida Parish Hall. The event, titled “Remembering Our Angels,” aims to raise funds to support the families of the deceased. “We want to give back to our community, to show them that even though we’re miles away, we’re still with them,” said Jane Wambugu, one of the organizers.
The fundraiser will include traditional Kenyan music and dance performances, as well as a silent auction. All proceeds will be sent directly to the families in Kakamega. “We hope that the Maltese community will come out and support us,” Wambugu added. “It’s a chance to celebrate the lives of these beautiful girls, and to show our solidarity with their families.”
