MP Pushes for Third Party Voice in Malta’s Gender Balance Calculation
MP’s Proposal: A New Voice for Third Parties in Malta’s Political Arena
Imagine standing at the bustling Republic Street in Valletta, the heart of Malta’s political scene, and feeling like your voice is just one among the many echoes bouncing off the historic buildings. This is the reality for third parties in Malta’s political scene, but one MP is pushing for a change that could amplify their voice.
What’s the Proposal All About?
Dr. Therese Comodini Cachia, a Nationalist MP, has tabled a proposal to tweak the way gender balance is calculated in political parties. Currently, the system favours the two main parties, Labour and Nationalist, as they have more seats in Parliament. Comodini Cachia wants to level the playing field by including third parties in the calculation.
“It’s about time we recognise the importance of third parties in our political system,” Comodini Cachia told Hot Malta. “They bring fresh ideas and perspectives, and their voice should be reflected in the way we calculate gender balance.”
Why It Matters for Third Parties
Third parties like Alternattiva Demokratika, Partit Demokratiku, and others often struggle to gain traction in Malta’s political scene. This proposal could give them a boost by encouraging these parties to field more women candidates to maintain their gender balance.
For Adrian Delia, leader of the Nationalist Party, this proposal is a step in the right direction. “We’ve always supported a more balanced political scene,” he said. “This proposal could help achieve that.”
However, Labour MP Clifton Grima expressed caution, “While we support gender balance, we need to ensure this doesn’t disadvantage the two main parties that represent the majority of Maltese voters.”
