Padel on Water: Marsa’s Unique Sports Proposal
Barging In: A Padel Court Afloat in Marsa?
Imagine this: a padel court, not nestled in a Maltese backyard or perched on a rooftop, but bobbing gently on the waves in Marsa. This isn’t a scene from a futuristic film, but a proposal currently under consideration. Ship repair company, Grand Harbour Marina, has applied to set up a padel court on a barge in the Marsa Sports Harbour.
Why a Padel Court on a Barge?
Grand Harbour Marina’s proposal, submitted to the Malta Maritime Authority, has sparked curiosity and debate among locals. The company, which usually deals with ship repairs and maintenance, wants to diversify its offerings. “We’re looking to create a unique sports facility that’s accessible to everyone,” says a spokesperson for the company. The barge, they explain, would be moored in the Sports Harbour, providing a novel setting for padel enthusiasts.
Padel, a racket sport similar to tennis, has gained popularity in Malta in recent years. With courts springing up across the islands, from Msida to Mellieha, the Grand Harbour Marina’s proposal adds a new dimension to the sport’s local scene. But why a barge? “We want to offer something different,” the spokesperson says. “And what’s more different than playing padel on water?”
Navigating the Waters of Planning and Public Opinion
The proposal is still in its early stages, and the company is navigating the complexities of planning permission and public opinion. While some welcome the innovative idea, others have raised concerns about safety and accessibility. “I’m all for new sports facilities, but a padel court on a barge? I’m not convinced it’s the safest idea,” says Joe, a Marsa resident.
Grand Harbour Marina, however, is confident that the project can be made safe and accessible. “We’re working closely with the relevant authorities to ensure the barge is stable, secure, and compliant with all safety regulations,” the spokesperson assures. They also plan to include disabled access and changing facilities on the barge.
As for the court itself, it would be designed to withstand the elements, with a surface that can handle the occasional splash of sea water. “We’re looking at materials that can withstand the unique challenges of a maritime environment,” the spokesperson explains.
: A New Wave of Sports Facilities?
If approved, the padel court on a barge could set a precedent for unique sports facilities in Malta. It’s not the first time a company has thought outside the box to create a novel sports experience. Remember the rooftop football pitch in Paceville, or the underwater diving pool in Qawra?
But for now, all eyes are on Marsa. The Malta Maritime Authority is currently reviewing the proposal, and a decision is expected in the coming months. If given the green light, the padel court on a barge could be floating our way sooner than you think.
