Żebbuġ Mdina Road Crash: Driver in Critical Condition

Emergency services rushed to the Żebbuġ Mdina Road yesterday afternoon following a severe road traffic accident that left a driver in a critical condition. The crash, which involved two vehicles, occurred near the junction with Triq il-Kuncizzjoni, just a stone’s throw from the iconic Ġgantija Temples.

Rescue Operations and Traffic Disruption

The Malta Police Force swiftly closed the road to facilitate rescue operations, causing significant traffic disruptions in the area. Witnesses reported a heavy presence of emergency services, including an air ambulance, which landed at the nearby Ta’ Qali National Park. The injured driver was subsequently transferred to Mater Dei Hospital for immediate medical attention.

Investigation Underway

The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation by the Malta Police. However, early reports suggest that excessive speed may have been a contributing factor. Inspector Ian Abdilla from the Road Policing Unit urged drivers to adhere to speed limits, stating, “Speed kills, and we must all do our part to ensure the safety of ourselves and others on our roads.”

This incident comes amidst growing concerns about road safety in Malta, with a recent study by the National Statistics Office revealing an increase in road traffic accidents involving injuries. In response, the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, and Capital Projects has pledged to implement stricter enforcement measures and improve road infrastructure.

In the meantime, the local community extends its support and well-wishes to the injured driver and their family during this challenging time. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is urged to contact the Malta Police on 112.
