Darren Carabott Re-elected as PAC Chair
Carabott Returns to Helm Public Accounts Committee
Malta’s Parliament will see a familiar face at the helm of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) as Darren Carabott has been re-elected as its chair. The announcement came during a parliamentary session held at the Parliament Building in Valletta, with Carabott securing a majority of votes from his fellow MPs.
Carabott’s Track Record
Carabott, a veteran politician from the Nationalist Party, has a proven track record in finance and economics. He previously served as the Minister of Finance and the Economy, a role that equipped him with the necessary skills to lead the PAC. His re-election signals Parliament’s confidence in his ability to scrutinise the government’s spending and ensure transparency and accountability.
Carabott’s first term as PAC chair saw significant improvements in the committee’s work. He streamlined processes, ensuring that reports were submitted in a timely manner and that recommendations were followed up on. His leadership also saw an increase in public engagement, with more people tuning in to PAC sessions held at the Parliament Building in Valletta.
: Carabott’s Plans
In an interview with Hot Malta, Carabott outlined his plans for the coming term. “I want to build on the progress we’ve made,” he said. “We’ll be focusing on improving the quality of our reports, ensuring they’re not just comprehensive but also accessible to the public. We’ll also be looking into new ways to engage with the public, perhaps through outreach sessions or social media.”
Carabott also hinted at plans to scrutinise government spending in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. “The government has had to make some tough decisions regarding spending,” he said. “We’ll be looking into these decisions, ensuring that they were necessary and that the money was spent wisely.”
