Gżira Scaffolding Collapse: Driver’s Terrifying Escape Caught on Camera
Imagine this: You’re driving down Gżira’s Triq San Ġorġ, a bustling street lined with shops and apartments. Suddenly, the towering scaffolding ahead starts to sway, then collapses like a house of cards, crashing onto the road just metres in front of your car. Terrifying, right? This was the reality for a driver who captured the heart-stopping moment on camera.
Scaffolding Collapse in Gżira
The incident occurred on a busy afternoon, causing chaos and sending shockwaves through the usually peaceful residential area. The scaffolding, which was being used for construction work on a nearby building, gave way without warning, leaving behind a tangled mess of metal and debris.
No Injuries, But a Close Call
Miraculously, no one was injured in the incident. The driver who captured the footage on their dashcam managed to avoid the falling debris by braking just in time. “I’ve never been so scared in my life,” they told Hot Malta. “One second, I was driving along, and the next, the scaffolding was coming down right in front of me.”
Investigation Launched
The incident has sparked an investigation by the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA). They are looking into the cause of the collapse and whether any safety regulations were breached. The construction company involved has declined to comment while the investigation is ongoing.
This isn’t the first time scaffolding has collapsed in Malta, and it’s a stark reminder of the importance of safety regulations and their enforcement. In 2018, a scaffolding collapse in Valletta’s Republic Street injured several people and caused significant damage to nearby buildings.
Hot Malta has reached out to the OHSA for comment and will update this story as more information becomes available.
