Lebanon, Israel & US Sign Historic Pact: What’s in it for Malta?

Malta’s Mediterranean Neighbours Make History

Imagine standing on the bustling streets of Valletta, our capital city, and looking out towards the Mediterranean. Now picture this: two of our closest neighbours, Lebanon and Israel, along with the United States, have just signed a historic trilateral framework pact. This isn’t just a story about distant politics; it’s a tale that ripples right to our doorstep.

What’s in the Pact?

The trilateral framework pact, signed in the Lebanese capital Beirut, focuses on enhancing security, economic development, and diplomatic relations between the three nations. It’s a significant step towards normalising ties between Lebanon and Israel, who’ve been officially at war since 1948. The US, as a key player in the region, is facilitating this diplomatic dance.

For Malta, this pact is more than just a piece of news from afar. Our strategic location in the Mediterranean makes us a natural partner in such initiatives. We’ve long been a hub for diplomatic dialogue, and our neutrality has often made us a trusted intermediary.

Malta’s Role: Past, Present, and Future

Our history with the region runs deep. Malta’s Grandmaster, Fra’ Pietro del Monte, played a role in the 19th-century peace negotiations between the Ottoman Empire and European powers. More recently, our former President, Eddie Fenech Adami, was instrumental in the 2005 peace talks between Lebanon and Israel.

Today, Malta continues to foster these ties. Our Foreign Minister, Evarist Bartolo, has welcomed the pact, stating, “Malta has always advocated for peace and stability in the region. This agreement is a step in the right direction.”

, Malta could play a role in implementing the pact’s provisions. Our expertise in Mediterranean affairs, coupled with our EU membership, makes us an ideal partner. We could help facilitate economic cooperation, promote cultural exchange, or even provide a neutral venue for further talks.
