Malta Court Hears Case of Woman Who Lost Arm to Adopted Dog

In the heart of Msida, a quiet town known more for its historic churches than dramatic court cases, the law courts are abuzz with an unusual and heart-wrenching case. A woman, let’s call her Maria, is suing the local council and the animal shelter she adopted a dog from, after the animal severely injured her, resulting in the amputation of her arm.

Maria’s Story

Maria, a 42-year-old single mother, had always wanted a dog for her young daughter. She visited the animal shelter in Msida, drawn by their reputation for caring for stray and abandoned dogs. She fell in love with a seemingly docile, one-year-old mixed breed named Max. The shelter assured her he was friendly and well-behaved, so she took him home.

Tragedy struck just two weeks later. Max, for reasons still unknown, suddenly turned on Maria, latching onto her arm. Despite her best efforts to free herself, the damage was severe. She underwent emergency surgery, but her arm couldn’t be saved.

The Legal Battle

Devastated and facing a life-changing injury, Maria is now seeking justice. Her lawyer, Joseph Azzopardi, argues that the shelter and the local council, which oversees the shelter, are responsible. “They had a duty of care,” Azzopardi says, “They should have ensured the dog was safe before allowing Maria to adopt him.”

The council and the shelter, however, maintain they followed proper procedures. They claim Maria was warned about the risks of adopting a dog with an unknown history. The court will now decide who is responsible.

Community Reaction

Msida residents are divided. Some sympathize with Maria, others with the shelter. “We love our animals here,” says long-time resident, Anna Zammit. “But we also understand Maria’s pain. It’s a tough situation.” The case has sparked debates about animal welfare, adoption processes, and personal responsibility.

Meanwhile, Maria, now learning to live with her injury, is determined to raise awareness. “I never thought adopting a dog could lead to this,” she says. “I just want to ensure no one else goes through what I have.”
