Malta’s New Bus Routes: Smooth Sailing or Bumpy Ride?

Traffic Snarls as New Bus Routes Take Effect Today

Commuters across Malta woke up to a new reality this morning as the Public Transport Services Regulation announced its latest route changes, aiming to streamline services and reduce travel times. The changes, effective today, June 27, 2026, have already caused a stir, with traffic congestion reported along key routes like the Triq San Gwann and Triq L-Imdina in Msida.

What’s Changed?

The new routes, dubbed ‘MaltaMóve 2.0’, introduce several modifications, including:

    • Extended hours for night buses, now running until 2 AM on weekends.
    • New routes connecting rural areas to major hubs, such as the X3 from Żebbuġ to Valletta via Msida.
    • Revised schedules for peak hours, aiming to reduce wait times and overcrowding.

Reactions from Commuters

Reactions from commuters have been mixed. While some welcome the extended night bus service, others are grappling with longer wait times due to route realignments. “I’ve been waiting for 20 minutes, and my bus hasn’t even passed yet,” grumbled Joe, a regular commuter from Birkirkara. “But at least I can get home later on weekends,” he added, seeing a silver lining.

Dr. Maria Azzopardi, a lecturer at the University of Malta, praised the new rural connections. “The X3 will make a huge difference for students and residents in Żebbuġ. It’s about time we improved public transport in rural areas,” she said.

The next few weeks will be crucial as commuters adjust to the new routes. The Public Transport Services Regulation has assured the public that they are monitoring feedback and will make necessary adjustments. In the meantime, drivers are advised to expect delays and plan their journeys accordingly.

“We understand that change can be challenging, but we believe these improvements will ultimately benefit everyone,” said a spokesperson for the Public Transport Services Regulation. “We encourage everyone to give MaltaMóve 2.0 a chance and provide us with your feedback.”
