OpenAI’s New Model: Malta Left Out

AI Barrier: OpenAI’s New Model Excluded from Malta’s Reach

Imagine you’re sitting in a bustling café along Republic Street in Valletta, your laptop open, eager to explore the latest advancements in artificial intelligence. You’ve heard whispers of OpenAI’s new model, but as you log in, a message pops up: “This feature is currently unavailable in your region.” You’re not alone, Malta. OpenAI has restricted its limited release of the new model to the United States only.

Malta’s AI Ambitions: A Setback?

Malta, with its ambitious plans to become an AI hub, is left on the sidelines for now. The island nation has been actively promoting AI, with initiatives like the Malta.AI Taskforce and the AI Strategy for Malta 2030. This restriction from OpenAI, a leading AI research organization, is a setback, but it’s not stopping local innovators from pushing forward.

Dr. Marc Zammit, a local AI expert and lecturer at the University of Malta, sees this as a challenge rather than a roadblock. “It’s disappointing, but it’s also an opportunity for us to explore other avenues and collaborate more closely within our local ecosystem,” he says.

Local Innovation: Looking Inward

Malta’s AI scene is vibrant, with startups like Wired productions and AI Malta leading the way. This restriction might just push them to innovate further. Wired Productions’ CEO, Jonathan Cilia, believes this could be a chance for Malta to develop its own AI models. “We’ve always been about creating our own path. This might just be the push we need,” he says.

Malta’s strategic location and English-speaking population make it an ideal test bed for AI applications in the Mediterranean. The government’s commitment to AI, with initiatives like the AI Council and the AI Malta Foundation, ensures that the sector remains a priority.

So, while Malta might be excluded from OpenAI’s latest model, it’s not slowing down the island’s AI ambitions. Instead, it’s pushing local innovators to look inward, collaborate more, and maybe, just maybe, create something uniquely Maltese.
