Malta’s Divers Urge Boaters: Slow Down, Stay Safe
Local Divers Sound Alarm After Close Calls with Boats
Imagine, if you will, the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean off Malta’s coast. You’re a freediver, descending into the deep, when suddenly, the hum of a boat engine breaks the silence. You look up, heart pounding, as a vessel looms large, its wake threatening to drag you under. This isn’t a scene from a thriller, but a reality faced by Malta’s freedivers and spearfishers.
Near Misses Spark Concern
Recent near misses have sparked concern among Malta’s underwater community. “I’ve had boats pass within metres of me while I was fishing,” says experienced spear fisher, Joe Xuereb. “It’s not just dangerous for us, but also for the marine life we’re trying to protect.”
Freediver and instructor, Maria Azzopardi, echoes these sentiments. “We’ve had incidents where boats have disturbed our training sessions, causing us to lose valuable practice time and putting our safety at risk.”
Boaters: Unwitting Partners in Preservation
Boaters, often unaware of the potential dangers, are being urged to exercise more caution. “We’re not asking them to stay away,” says Xuereb. “We’re asking them to slow down, keep a safe distance, and be aware of their surroundings.”
Malta’s waters are a treasure trove of marine life, attracting divers from around the world. Boaters, by being more mindful, can play a crucial role in preserving this underwater world.
Local dive centres are stepping up, too. “We’re incorporating boating safety into our courses,” says Azzopardi. “We want our students to understand the importance of responsible boating, just as much as responsible diving.”
