Malta’s Dr. Joseph Mifsud Honoured with Global Environmental Award
In the heart of Valletta, at the historic Auberge de Castille, a local academic received international recognition for his tireless efforts towards sustainability. Dr. Joseph Mifsud, a lecturer at the University of Malta, was awarded the prestigious Global 500 Award for his outstanding contributions to environmental conservation.
From Valletta to the Global Stage
Dr. Mifsud, a resident of the quaint village of Żurrieq, has been instrumental in promoting sustainable practices both locally and internationally. His work, focusing on marine conservation and climate change, has earned him this prestigious accolade, bestowed by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
The award ceremony, held at the UN’s headquarters in Nairobi, saw Dr. Mifsud join an elite group of environmental champions, including Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. “It’s an honour to be recognised among such distinguished figures,” said Dr. Mifsud, reflecting on the ceremony.
Sustainability in Action
Dr. Mifsud’s work is not just confined to the classroom. He has been actively involved in various local projects, including the establishment of Malta’s first marine protected area, the Blue Belt initiative. His efforts have also extended to the international arena, collaborating with organizations like the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Mediterranean Science Commission (CIESM).
His latest project, the ‘Mediterranean Seagrass Restoration Project’, aims to restore and protect seagrass meadows, crucial habitats for marine biodiversity. “Seagrass meadows are often overlooked, yet they play a vital role in carbon sequestration and nutrient cycling,” explained Dr. Mifsud.
Back home in Żurrieq, Dr. Mifsud’s neighbours couldn’t be prouder. “It’s wonderful to see one of our own making such a difference,” said Maria, a local shopkeeper. “He’s always been passionate about the environment, even as a child.”
