Malta’s Heat: A Lesson in Love and Respect

I’ve lived in Malta for over a decade, and I’ve always prided myself on my ability to handle the island’s scorching summers. But after spending a week in Paris during a heatwave, I’ve got a newfound respect for the Maltese heat – and a few tips to share.

Malta’s Heat: A Misunderstood Friend

Malta’s heat is often misunderstood. It’s not just about the numbers on the thermometer; it’s about the humidity, the sea breeze, and the way the sun bounces off the limestone buildings. It’s a heat that demands respect, but it’s also a heat that’s easy to love once you’ve learned to embrace it. After all, it’s the heat that turns our beaches into sun-worshippers’ paradises and our rooftop bars into magical nighttime retreats.

Paris Heatwave: A Lesson in Humidity

In Paris, the heat was different. It was heavy, oppressive, and relentless. The humidity was like a blanket, smothering any attempt at comfort. The city’s concrete and steel absorbed the heat, radiating it back at us from every angle. I found myself longing for the dry, manageable heat of Malta, where at least the sea breeze offers some respite.

I spent my days seeking refuge in the shaded streets of the Marais, sipping on overpriced water in the Luxembourg Garden, and cursing the lack of air conditioning in the metro. I realized that while Malta’s heat can be intense, it’s also more forgiving than I’d given it credit for.

Surviving Malta’s Heat: Lessons from Paris

So, what can we learn from my Parisian heatwave experience to help us survive Malta’s summer? Firstly, hydration is key. In Paris, I found myself drinking water constantly, and I realized I could be doing the same in Malta. It’s not just about drinking when you’re thirsty; it’s about staying ahead of the game.

Secondly, timing is everything. In Paris, I learned to plan my days around the heat. I’d get up early to explore before the sun got too high, and I’d spend the hottest part of the day indoors, visiting museums or enjoying a long lunch. I could do the same in Malta. Why not make the most of the cooler mornings and evenings, and use the hottest part of the day to enjoy a siesta or a dip in the sea?

Lastly, embrace the shade. In Paris, I found myself seeking out the shade of the city’s many trees and awnings. In Malta, we’re blessed with plenty of shade, from the natural canopies of our trees to the man-made shade of our balconies and arcades. Let’s make the most of it.

So, Malta, I was wrong. I can’t handle the heat in Paris. But I can handle yours. In fact, I’ve grown to love it. It’s a heat that’s challenging, but also full of opportunity. It’s a heat that makes our island unique, and it’s a heat that we can embrace, if we’re smart about it.
