World Cup Fever in Malta: A Tale of Divided Loyalties

In the heart of Valletta, Malta’s capital, the bustling Republic Street is a vibrant mix cultures, but this month, it’s been painted in the colours of football. The 2022 FIFA World Cup has descended upon the island nation, and with it, a wave of passion, debate, and a healthy dose of friendly rivalry.

Malta’s Own: The Minimalists

Malta, with a population of just over 500,000, has its own national team, but their journey to the World Cup is a long and arduous one. Ranked 177th in the world, the Maltese team is a David among Goliaths. Yet, their fans are undeterred. “We might not be the best, but we’re the loudest,” laughs Joe, a die-hard Malta supporter, as he sips on a coffee at a bustling café in Paceville.

Divided Loyalties: The Italian Connection

Malta’s Italian connection runs deep, with many Maltese claiming Italian heritage. This World Cup, it’s no surprise that many are cheering for the Azzurri. “I’m Maltese, but my heart is Italian,” says Maria, a retired teacher from Birkirkara. “I’ve been supporting them since I was a girl. This World Cup, I’m hoping for a repeat of 2006,” she adds, referring to Italy’s triumphant win in Germany.

But it’s not just Italy. With Malta’s historical ties and proximity to Europe, fans here are divided among several teams. There are those cheering for Spain, others for France, and a significant number for England. The Maltese love for football is such that even the smallest of pubs in the quietest of towns will be packed with fans during the matches.

The Unlikely Heroes: The Underdogs

Yet, amidst the divided loyalties, there’s a growing appreciation for the underdogs. “I’ve been supporting Saudi Arabia this World Cup,” says Matthew, a young student from Msida. “They might not have the best players, but they have the best spirit. They remind me of our own Malta team,” he adds, a glint of pride in his eyes.

This World Cup, Malta might not have a team of its own in the tournament, but it certainly has a spirit that’s all its own. It’s a spirit that celebrates the game, the passion, and the unity that football brings, even in its most divided forms. So, whether you’re cheering for Malta, Italy, England, or the underdogs, one thing’s for sure – this World Cup, Malta is ready to party.
