New Bus Routes Cause Morning Chaos in Malta

Traffic Snarls as New Bus Routes Kick In Today

It’s 7:30 AM and Republic Street is already a parking lot. Today, Malta’s public transport system is undergoing a significant overhaul, with new bus routes and schedules taking effect. Commuters, like me, are feeling the pinch as we navigate the morning rush hour.

What’s Changed?

The Malta Public Transport (MPT) has introduced 15 new routes, aiming to improve efficiency and connectivity. The most talked-about change is the new Route 12, which now serves the bustling area around the University of Malta in Msida. However, the increased traffic in this area has led to some teething problems.

the introduction of the ‘BusPlus’ system, which allows passengers to pay via their phones, has been a mixed bag. While many appreciate the convenience, others are struggling with the new technology.

Reactions from the Streets

I caught up with Maria, a local teacher, who’s been stuck in traffic for over an hour. “I’ve missed my first class,” she sighs, “I understand they’re trying to improve things, but this is chaos.”

On the other hand, Matthew, a student at the University of Malta, is thrilled with the new Route 12. “It’s a breakthrough,” he says, “I no longer have to walk for miles to get to campus.”

MPT’s Response

MPT spokesperson, Joseph Borg, acknowledges the challenges. “We expected some teething problems,” he admits, “But we’re working hard to resolve them. We urge passengers to be patient as we iron out these issues.”

Borg also encourages commuters to use the ‘BusPlus’ system, assuring them that help is available at all bus termini.
