New Parish Priests & Seminary Vice-Rector Appointed in Malta
In a quiet ceremony at St. John’s Co-Cathedral, Bishop Mario Grech announced the appointment of four new parish priests and a new vice-rector for the seminary. The changes, effective immediately, will see familiar faces taking on new roles and bringing fresh perspectives to Maltese parishes.
New Faces in Familiar Places
The Bishop’s announcement brings a mix of excitement and anticipation among the faithful. Among the new parish priests is Fr. Mark Azzopardi, who will be taking over the reins at the historic parish of Mellieħa. The 37-year-old priest, known for his engaging homilies and community involvement, will be replacing Fr. Anthony Formosa, who is retiring after 25 years of service.
Fr. Azzopardi, who has been serving as the parish priest of Ħaż-Żebbuġ, is looking forward to his new role. “Mellieħa is a vibrant parish with a strong sense of community,” he said. “I’m excited to build on the good work done by Fr. Anthony and to serve the people of Mellieħa in this new capacity.”
A Seminary with a New Vice-Rector
In another significant appointment, Fr. Charles Mallia has been named the new vice-rector of the seminary. Fr. Mallia, who has been serving as the parish priest of Żurrieq, will be taking over from Fr. Joseph Borg, who is stepping down after five years of service.
Fr. Mallia, who is known for his dedication to youth ministry, is looking forward to his new role. “The seminary plays a crucial role in forming the priests of tomorrow,” he said. “I’m excited to work with the seminarians and help them grow in their vocations.”

The appointments come at a time when the Church in Malta is undergoing a period of renewal and reform. Bishop Grech, who has been spearheading these efforts, sees these appointments as a step forward in this process.
