OpenAI’s New Model: Malta Left Out as US Gets Priority

In the heart of San Ġwann, at the bustling Triq San Girgor, you’ll find Malta’s tech enthusiasts huddled in cafes, their eyes glued to screens, discussing the latest AI developments. Today, their excitement is tinged with disappointment. OpenAI, the company behind the groundbreaking AI model DALL-E 2, has restricted the limited release of its new model to the United States only.

Malta’s Tech Scene Buzzing with Disappointment

Malta’s tech community has been abuzz with anticipation for OpenAI’s latest model. The island nation, known for its progressive stance on technology, has been eager to explore the potential of this new AI. However, the restriction has left local developers and enthusiasts feeling sidelined. “It’s frustrating,” says Marcella Mifsud, a local AI specialist, “We’re a small island, but we’re not behind in terms of tech. We deserve a chance to explore this too.”

Why the Restriction?

OpenAI has cited regulatory challenges and a desire to control the model’s initial impact as reasons for the restriction. However, this hasn’t stopped the local community from speculating. “It’s probably a matter of resources,” suggests John Tedesco, a local AI consultant. “Rolling out a new model globally takes a lot of effort. They’re likely focusing on their home market first.”

: Malta’s Response

Despite the setback, Malta’s tech community isn’t deterred. Local AI enthusiasts are already exploring alternative models and ways to adapt existing ones. The MIT-inspired AI lab in Msida is also working on creating local AI solutions. “We can’t wait for others to give us access,” says Mifsud. “We need to build our own capabilities.”

Meanwhile, the Maltese government is considering reaching out to OpenAI to express the island’s interest and potential. “We’re not going to sit back and miss out on this opportunity,” says a government official, speaking on condition of anonymity.
