Cocaine Seized at Marsaxlokk: Man Caught with Kilogram Strapped to Waist

In an unexpected turn of events, Maltese police intercepted a man at the bustling fishing village of Marsaxlokk, seizing a kilogram of cocaine strapped to his waist. The arrest, made on Tuesday afternoon, has through the usually tranquil southern town, known more for its fresh fish and traditional Luzzu boats than illicit activities.

How It Unfolded

The suspect, a 35-year-old man from Msida, was spotted acting suspiciously by plainclothes officers patrolling the area. Their suspicions were raised when they noticed the unusual bulge around his waist. A quick search revealed the kilo of cocaine, neatly wrapped and secured in a makeshift belt.

Police sources revealed that the man was cooperative during the arrest and provided information that could lead to further arrests. The drugs, with an estimated street value of €50,000, were seized, and the man was taken into custody pending inquiries.

Marsaxlokk: A Surprise Hotspot for Drug Trafficking?

While Marsaxlokk is no stranger to police patrols, drug trafficking is not typically associated with this picturesque fishing village. The arrest has raised questions about whether the area is being used as a transit point for drugs, given its proximity to the sea and the constant flow of tourists and locals.

Inspector Joseph Camilleri, leading the investigation, declined to comment on whether this was an isolated incident or part of a larger operation. “We are exploring all leads and will leave no stone unturned in our investigation,” he said.

Local residents, however, are hopeful that this is an isolated incident. “Marsaxlokk is a peaceful place,” said Maria, a long-time resident. “We don’t want our village to be associated with these kinds of activities.”

What’s Next?

As the investigation continues, police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward. The public can contact the drugs squad on 2122 4001 or 2122 4002, or visit their offices at Floriana Police Station.

In the meantime, life in Marsaxlokk goes on. The weekly fish market will still draw crowds, and the traditional Luzzu boats will continue to bob in the harbor. But the village’s residents will no doubt be keeping a closer eye on their neighbors, hoping that this was indeed an isolated incident.
