Caravaggio’s Masterpiece Heads to North America

Imagine standing in the dimly lit St. John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta, Malta, gazing upon ‘The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist’, a masterpiece by the legendary Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. Now, picture this: in just a few months, art enthusiasts across North America will have the chance to marvel at this very painting, as it embarks on a historic tour.

Malta’s Artistic Treasure Sets Sail

The ‘Caravaggio in America’ exhibition, set to kick off in October, will be the first time this iconic artwork leaves Malta since it was stolen in 1984 and recovered two years later. The tour, organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in collaboration with the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, will see the painting exhibited in Boston, Chicago, and Washington D.C.

What Does This Mean for Malta?

For Malta, this is more than just an art exhibition. It’s a chance to showcase our rich cultural heritage on a global scale. “This is an opportunity for Malta to shine on the international stage,” says Dr. Noel Zammit, art historian and director of the Malta National Museum of Fine Arts. “Caravaggio’s work is a testament to our artistic legacy, and sharing it with the world is a proud moment for us.”

the exhibition is expected to draw significant attention to Malta, potentially boosting tourism and cultural exchange. “We’re excited about the potential this has for putting Malta on the map,” says Joe Muscat, Minister for Tourism. “We’re working closely with our American counterparts to ensure this exhibition is a success and that it brings positive attention to our islands.”

The ‘Caravaggio in America’ exhibition is set to run from October 2023 to February 2024. For those planning to catch the painting in the States, mark your calendars. And for those of us in Malta, let’s take a moment to appreciate the artistic treasure in our midst before it sets sail.
