Cocaine Found Strapped to Man’s Waist at MIA
Cocaine Seized in Unusual Waist Strapped Stash
In a bust that left customs officers raising eyebrows, a kilo of cocaine was discovered strapped to a man’s waist at the Malta International Airport. The suspect, a 37-year-old Brazilian national, was intercepted during a routine check at the departures lounge on Tuesday evening.
How It All Unfolded
Sources close to the investigation revealed that the man, who was set to board a flight to Brazil, seemed nervous during the security screening. A closer inspection led customs officers to discover the cocaine, neatly wrapped and secured around his waist using tape. The street value of the seized drug is estimated to be around €50,000.
This unusual method of drug smuggling is a first for Malta, according to a spokesperson for the Malta Police Force. “We’ve seen drugs hidden in various creative ways, but this is certainly a new one,” they commented, declining to be named.
Local Reaction and Law Enforcement Response
News of the seizure has sparked conversation among locals, with many expressing shock and amusement at the suspect’s choice of hiding spot. “I mean, who thinks to hide drugs there?” laughed Joe, a regular commuter at the airport. “It’s like he wanted to get caught,” he added, shaking his head.
Law enforcement, however, is taking the matter seriously. The suspect has been arrested and is being held in custody pending further investigations. Inspector Mario Xuereb from the Drug Squad confirmed that they are treating this as a serious case of drug trafficking and are exploring all leads to dismantle any potential network involved.
“We’re grateful for the vigilance of our customs officers who intercepted this attempt to smuggle drugs out of our country,” Xuereb said. “We want to assure the public that we’re committed to keeping Malta’s streets drug-free and will continue to work tirelessly towards this goal.”
This seizure comes hot on the heels of a recent report by the National Drug Agency that showed a decrease in drug-related crimes in Malta. However, officials warn that the situation remains fluid and that the public should remain vigilant.
In the meantime, locals can’t help but chuckle at the brazenness of the suspect’s hiding spot. “I guess it’s true what they say,” mused Maria, a shop owner in Valletta’s Republic Street. “Desperate times call for desperate measures. Or in this case, desperate hiding spots.”
