Malta’s Dr. Muscat Wins UN’s Top Environmental Award
Malta’s Own Dr. Muscat Named Champion of the Earth
In a ceremony that could have been lifted straight from a Hollywood awards show, Dr. Joseph Muscat, a humble Maltese academic, found himself centre stage at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The reason? He was one of only six recipients worldwide to receive the prestigious Champions of the Earth award, the UN’s highest environmental accolade.
From Valletta to New York
Dr. Muscat, a professor at the University of Malta’s Department of Geography, has dedicated his career to promoting sustainable development and climate change mitigation. His work, often conducted in the bustling streets and quiet corners of our capital city, Valletta, has now been recognised on the global stage. The award, presented by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, honoured Dr. Muscat’s “inspiring leadership and outstanding efforts in promoting sustainable development and climate action”.
Malta’s Green Pioneer
Dr. Muscat’s journey to this recognition began right here in Malta. His research, focusing on urban sustainability and climate resilience, has been instrumental in shaping local policies. From advocating for green spaces in the heart of Valletta to pushing for more sustainable public transport, his work has left an indelible mark on our island nation.
His impact extends beyond our shores. Dr. Muscat has been a driving force behind the Mediterranean’s first climate change adaptation strategy. He’s also played a pivotal role in the Mediterranean City to City (MedCities) network, promoting sustainable urban development across the region.
But Dr. Muscat is quick to deflect praise. “This award is not just for me,” he told Hot Malta in an exclusive interview. “It’s for everyone in Malta who’s worked tirelessly to make our country greener and more sustainable. It’s a testament to what we can achieve when we work together.”
As we celebrate this remarkable achievement, it’s clear that Dr. Muscat’s work is far from over. With the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement on climate change demanding urgent action, his expertise remains crucial. And with Malta set to take over the EU presidency in 2017, his influence could extend even further.
So, what’s next for Malta’s green pioneer? “I want to see more young Maltese involved in environmental issues,” he says. “I want to inspire them to take up the mantle and carry on the fight for a sustainable future. Because at the end of the day, it’s their future we’re fighting for.”
