Malta’s Green Revolution: New EV Charging Stations and Solar Farm Unveiled

Imagine cruising along the bustling Triq San Pawl in Ħal Qormi, Malta’s second most populous locality, without a hint of engine noise. This vision is no longer a distant dream, as the Maltese government has announced a significant boost to the island’s electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure and renewable energy capacity.

EV Charging Stations: Powering Malta’s Green Future

In a bid to make Malta a leader in sustainable mobility, Transport Malta has revealed plans to install 100 new EV charging stations across the country by the end of 2027. The first batch of 20 charging points, equipped with both Type 2 and CCS connectors, will be operational by the end of this year. Ħal Qormi residents and visitors can expect to see these new charging stations popping up at strategic locations, including the popular Pjazza San Ġorġ in the heart of the town.

These new charging points are part of the government’s commitment to increasing the number of public charging stations tenfold by 2030. This ambitious target aims to encourage more Maltese drivers to switch to electric vehicles and reduce the country’s carbon footprint.

Solar Farm: Harnessing the Power of the Sun

In parallel with the EV charging infrastructure expansion, the Malta Resources Authority has announced the construction of a new 20 MW solar farm in the limits of Żebbuġ, a town in the northwest of Malta. This significant investment in renewable energy is set to more than double Malta’s current solar capacity, further diversifying the country’s energy mix and reducing its reliance on imported fossil fuels.

The Żebbuġ solar farm, expected to be operational by late 2027, will generate enough clean energy to power around 5,000 Maltese homes. it will contribute to the government’s target of generating 70% of Malta’s electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

These announcements come on the heels of Malta’s successful hosting of the COP27 climate summit last year, further cementing the island nation’s commitment to leading the global fight against climate change.
