Rider in Critical Condition After St. Julian’s Crash
Emergency services rushed to the scene of a motorcycle accident in St. Julian’s yesterday, where a man was left critically injured after falling off his bike. The incident, which occurred around 5 pm on Triq Għorġ Borg Olivier, brought traffic to a standstill as paramedics worked to stabilise the rider.
Witnesses Describe Chaotic Scene
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with the motorcyclist, identified only as a 35-year-old man from Msida, lying unconscious on the road. “I was walking my dog when I heard the screech of brakes and a loud thud,” said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “By the time I looked up, the motorcyclist was already on the ground, and his bike was skidding across the road.”
Investigation Underway
The police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. According to a spokesperson, “Preliminary inquiries suggest that the motorcyclist may have lost control of his vehicle due to excessive speed. However, we are not ruling out any other possibilities at this stage.”
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is urged to contact the St. Julian’s Police Station on 21320202.
The injured man was taken to Mater Dei Hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition. Doctors are optimistic about his chances of recovery but have warned that he may face a long road to recovery.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of reckless driving. According to the Malta Police Force, there were 233 road accidents involving motorcycles in 2020, resulting in 10 fatalities and 248 injuries.
In response to this incident, the Malta Road Safety Council has called for stricter enforcement of speed limits and better driver education. “We need to do more to educate drivers about the dangers of speeding,” said a spokesperson. “We also need to see more investment in road safety infrastructure, such as better lighting and signage.”
As the investigation into this incident continues, one thing is clear: the roads of Malta can be dangerous places, and all road users must do their part to keep themselves and others safe.
