SCJ Children’s Choir: A Symphony of Young Voices in Malta

Imagine the joyous sound of over a hundred young voices filling the historic St. John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta. This isn’t a daydream, but a reality that unfolds annually with the SCJ Children’s Choir concert. This year’s event promises to be another melodious celebration of youth and music, right here in our beloved Malta.

About the SCJ Children’s Choir

The SCJ Children’s Choir is a vibrant ensemble comprising children aged 6 to 16 from various schools across Malta and Gozo. Under the baton of Maestro Joseph Grech, these young talents have been nurturing their musical skills and performing together since 2009. Their repertoire spans a wide range, from classical and sacred music to popular songs and traditional Maltese tunes.

Based at the St. Catherine’s School in Żebbuġ, the choir has become a beacon of musical excellence in Malta. It’s not just about the music, though. The choir fosters a sense of community and camaraderie among its members, many of whom have grown up together, sharing a common passion for music.

Annual Concert: A Night of Musical Magic

The annual concert is the highlight of the choir’s calendar. This year’s event, titled “A Symphony of Voices,” is set to take place on Saturday, 10 December at 7:30 PM. The venue, as always, is the magnificent St. John’s Co-Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site that provides a stunning backdrop for the choir’s performance.

The concert will feature a mix of old favorites and new pieces, including works by Mozart, Vivaldi, and even some contemporary composers. The choir will also perform a selection of Maltese songs, showcasing our rich musical heritage. Joining them on stage will be the Malta Youth Orchestra, adding another layer of musical depth to the evening.

For many of the children, this concert is a chance to showcase their hard work and dedication. It’s also an opportunity for them to share their love of music with a wider audience. As one young chorister put it, “It’s like we’re painting a picture with sound. And everyone gets to see it.”
