iGaming Fraud Evolves: Malta’s KYB Challenge
iGaming’s Shifting Sands: Fraud Evolves Beyond Player Verification
Malta’s St. Julian’s, once a sleepy seaside town, now pulses with the rhythm of the global iGaming industry. Here, in the heart of Europe’s iGaming capital, operators are facing a new reality: traditional player verification methods are no longer enough to combat fraud.
From KYC to KYB: The New Fraud Frontier
Know Your Customer (KYC) has been the iGaming industry’s first line of defense against fraud. But as Malta’s iGaming sector continues to grow, so does the sophistication of fraudulent activities. Criminals are now targeting operators themselves, bypassing KYC measures and focusing on the business behind the business – Know Your Business (KYB) has become the new battleground.
Local iGaming experts like Michael Mifsud, Head of Fraud & Risk at a leading Malta-based operator, confirm this shift. “We’re seeing a rise in sophisticated attacks targeting our business operations, not just our players,” he says.
Fraud 2.0: The Malta Connection
Malta’s strategic location and favorable regulatory environment have attracted some of the world’s top iGaming companies. But with this growth comes increased scrutiny and a higher risk of fraud. Local operators are now grappling with advanced persistent threats (APTs), complex money laundering schemes, and even state-sponsored attacks.
Take, for instance, the recent case of a local operator that fell victim to a sophisticated business email compromise (BEC) attack. The fraudsters, posing as a trusted business partner, convinced the operator to make a substantial payment to a fraudulent account. The attack, which could have been prevented with strong KYB measures, resulted in a significant financial loss for the Malta-based company.
Malta’s unique position as a bridge between Europe and North Africa makes it a prime target for organized crime syndicates looking to exploit iGaming companies for money laundering purposes. These groups often use complex networks of shell companies and nominee directors to hide their activities, making KYB a crucial line of defense.
The Road Ahead: Adapting to the New Reality
Malta’s iGaming industry is at a crossroads. Operators must adapt to this new reality, investing in strong KYB processes, and us advanced technologies like machine learning and artificial intelligence to stay ahead of the curve.
Local regulators, too, have a role to play. The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) is already working on enhancing its supervisory role, with a focus on preventing money laundering and terrorist financing. But more can be done to support operators in their fight against fraud.
As Mifsud puts it, “The iGaming industry in Malta is at the forefront of the global fight against fraud. We need to work together – operators, regulators, and technology providers – to stay one step ahead of the criminals and protect our industry’s future.”
