Malta Stars in HBO’s ‘Great Siege’ Drama
Malta to Star in HBO’s ‘Great Siege’ Drama Series
Imagine this: the grand streets of Valletta, the capital city of Malta, transformed into a 16th-century fortress. Cannon fire echoing through the historic streets, as the Order of St. John prepares to defend their island against the Ottoman Empire. This isn’t a scene from a history book, but the upcoming HBO drama series, ‘The Great Siege’.
Malta’s Historic Role Brought to Life
Malta, with its rich history and stunning architecture, has been chosen as the primary filming location for this epic historical drama. The series, produced by Kudos (a part of EndemolShine Group), will bring to life the 1565 Great Siege of Malta, a pivotal moment in European history.
The 15-month siege, led by the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, was one of the largest and most complex sieges of the 16th century. It ended with the Ottoman forces withdrawing, marking a significant turning point in the Ottoman-Habsburg wars and the history of Malta.
Filming in Malta: A Boost for the Local Industry
For Malta, this isn’t just an opportunity to showcase its historical significance on the global stage. It’s also a significant boost for the local film industry. The production is expected to create hundreds of jobs for local crew members, actors, and extras. It’s also set to inject much-needed funds into local businesses, from accommodation providers to catering services.
Malta Film Commissioner, Jonathan Attard, expressed his excitement about the project, saying, “We’re thrilled to welcome ‘The Great Siege’ to Malta. This series will not only bring our history to life but also bring significant economic benefits to our island.”
Filming is expected to begin later this year, with locations including the historic city of Mdina, the ancient megalithic temples, and the beautiful coastal towns. The production team is also set to work with local historians to ensure the series stays true to the historical events that unfolded on Malta’s shores.
