Malta’s Energy Future: Second Interconnector Completes Manufacturing

In the heart of Marsa, a small crowd gathered outside the Enemalta premises, their eyes fixed on the humming activity within. The reason? The completion of a project that’s set to transform Malta’s energy scene – the second interconnector.

From Blueprint to Reality

The second interconnector, a 900-megawatt undersea power cable, has been a buzzword in local news for years. But today, it’s finally a tangible reality. The manufacturing and testing phase, carried out by Italian firm Prysmian Group, has wrapped up, marking a significant milestone in Malta’s quest for energy self-sufficiency.

Prysmian’s team, a mix of Italian and Maltese engineers, have been working tirelessly at the Marsa plant. The scene inside was a symphony of industry – the whirr of machines, the clank of metal, and the steady hum of conversation in a mix of Italian and Maltese.

Connecting Malta to Sicily

The interconnector, once laid, will stretch 160 kilometers under the Mediterranean, connecting Malta to Sicily’s power grid. This will not only boost Malta’s energy security but also pave the way for renewable energy integration.

For Malta, this project is more than just a power cable. It’s a lifeline, a promise of energy independence, and a stepping stone towards a greener future. “This is about more than just power,” says Dr. Michael Farrugia, Malta’s Minister for Energy and Water Management. “It’s about security, it’s about sustainability, and it’s about our responsibility to future generations.”

The next phase involves laying the cable, a complex operation that’s expected to start later this year. Despite the challenges ahead, the mood in Marsa was optimistic. “We’ve come this far,” says one of the engineers, “The rest is just details.”

As for the impact on Malta’s energy scene? It’s set to be significant. “We’re looking at a 20% reduction in energy costs,” says Dr. Farrugia. “And that’s just the beginning.”
