Motorcyclist Critical After St. Julian’s Accident
Rider in Critical Condition After St. Julian’s Accident
Emergency services rushed to the scene of a motorcycle accident in St. Julian’s yesterday, where a man was left critically injured after falling off his bike. The incident, which occurred around 7 pm on Triq San Ġorġ, brought traffic to a standstill and left witnesses shaken.
What Happened?
The 35-year-old motorcyclist, identified only as Matthew, was traveling along the busy street when he lost control of his bike near the entrance of the Bay Street Shopping Complex. Witnesses reported seeing him swerve suddenly before falling off his motorcycle and landing heavily on the road.
Paramedics from the Malta Civil Protection Department arrived at the scene within minutes and found Matthew unconscious with serious injuries. He was immediately transported to Mater Dei Hospital, where he remains in the intensive care unit in a critical but stable condition.
Investigation Underway
The Malta Police Force has launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. According to a police spokesperson, “All possible factors are being considered, including mechanical failure, road conditions, and driver error.”
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that could help the investigation is urged to contact the police on 119 or visit their nearest police station.
This accident comes just weeks after a similar incident in Birkirkara, where a motorcyclist was seriously injured after colliding with a car. Road safety advocates have called for increased measures to protect motorcyclists, including better driver training and improved road infrastructure.
In the meantime, residents and businesses along Triq San Ġorġ have expressed their concern about the growing number of accidents in the area. “We’ve seen too many close calls here,” said one local shop owner, who wished to remain anonymous. “Something needs to be done to make this street safer.”
Road Safety in Malta
Malta has one of the highest road fatality rates in the European Union, with motorcyclists being particularly vulnerable. According to the National Statistics Office, there were 27 road deaths in Malta in 2020, with motorcyclists accounting for nearly a quarter of those fatalities.
Road safety experts have long called for a multi-pronged approach to tackle the issue, including stricter enforcement of traffic laws, better driver education, and improved road infrastructure. “We need to treat road safety as a public health issue,” said Dr. Maria Attard, a road safety specialist at the University of Malta. “That means investing in prevention and education, as well as enforcement.”
As Matthew fights for his life in hospital, his family has issued a plea for anyone with information about the accident to come forward. “We just want to know what happened to our son,” said his mother, Mary. “Any information, no matter how small, could help.”
