Motorcyclist Hospitalised After St. Julian’s Spill
Biker Down: Emergency Services Rush to St. Julian’s After Motorcycle Accident
In the heart of Malta’s bustling St. Julian’s, a motorcyclist was left nursing serious injuries after a late-night spill on Tuesday. The incident, which occurred around 10 pm on Triq San Giljan, brought traffic to a standstill and saw emergency services rush to the scene.
Witnesses Describe the Scene
Eyewitnesses reported seeing the motorcycle, a sleek black Yamaha, skid across the road before coming to a halt near the popular bar, Hugo’s Lounge. The rider, a man in his late 20s, was found lying on the ground, his helmet several feet away. “It all happened so fast,” said one witness, who wished to remain anonymous. “One moment he was speeding down the street, the next he was on the ground.”
Emergency Response and Aftermath
Paramedics from the Malta Civil Protection Department arrived within minutes, stabilising the injured man before transporting him to Mater Dei Hospital. His condition was described as serious but stable. The police closed off a section of Triq San Giljan for several hours as they investigated the cause of the accident.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by motorcyclists on Malta’s often crowded roads. According to the Malta Police, motorcycle accidents account for a significant number of road fatalities and injuries each year. In 2020 alone, there were 128 motorcycle accidents, resulting in 14 deaths and 117 injuries.
Safety Tips for Motorcyclists
In light of this incident, local motorcycle safety advocates are urging riders to prioritise safety. “Always wear a helmet that meets international safety standards,” advises Joe Borg, founder of the Malta Motorcycle Safety Group. “Also, make sure your motorcycle is in good condition, and never ride under the influence.”
Borg also recommends that motorcyclists take a advanced riding course to improve their skills and reaction times. “The better you can handle your motorcycle, the safer you’ll be on the road,” he says.
