Pilatus Depositors: The Long Wait for Justice
Pilatus Depositors: The Long Wait for Justice Continues
In the heart of Malta’s capital, Valletta, a sense of unease lingers among depositors of the now-defunct Pilatus Bank. Despite the bank’s collapse in 2019, around €130 million remains frozen, leaving hundreds of depositors in limbo. The story of these individuals, many of whom are ordinary Maltese citizens, is one of patience, frustration, and a relentless pursuit of justice.
From Promise to Collapse
Pilatus Bank, once a beacon of promise in Malta’s financial sector, was founded by Ali Sadr Hasheminejad, an Iranian-born businessman. The bank attracted high-profile clients, including the wife of Malta’s former Prime Minister, Joseph Muscat. However, its rapid rise was short-lived. In 2018, Hasheminejad was arrested in the United States on charges of violating U.S. sanctions against Iran. A year later, Pilatus Bank was put into administration, and its assets were frozen.
Depositors’ Struggle
Among those affected are Malta’s own, like 55-year-old Maria, a retired teacher from Msida. “I deposited my life savings in Pilatus,” she says, “Now, I’m living off my pension, and I’m not sure if I’ll ever see my money again.” Maria is not alone. Depositors, both local and foreign, have been left in a state of uncertainty, their funds trapped in a legal quagmire.
In 2021, the Maltese government set up a compensation scheme for small depositors, but many are still waiting for their claims to be processed. The scheme, while a step in the right direction, has been criticized for its slow pace and complex application process.
The Fight for Justice
Depositors have been vocal in their frustration, organizing protests and lobbying politicians for a swift resolution. They’ve also turned to the courts, filing lawsuits against Pilatus Bank’s administrators and the Maltese government. One such case, filed by a group of depositors in 2020, alleges negligence and misrepresentation on the part of the bank and its administrators.
Meanwhile, the investigation into Pilatus Bank’s collapse continues. In 2021, the Maltese police raided the bank’s former headquarters in Portomaso, St. Julian’s, as part of their ongoing probe into money laundering allegations.
The road to justice for Pilatus depositors is long and winding. Yet, despite the setbacks, their resolve remains unbroken. As Maria puts it, “We won’t give up. We’ve come this far, and we’ll see this through to the end.”
