Shoreline’s Financial Woes Predate Legal Dispute, Says Turkish Contractor

Standing at the bustling St. George’s Bay, the once-thriving Shoreline complex now wears a desolate facade, a stark contrast to its former glory. The 5-star hotel and apartment complex, a staple of Malta’s tourism scene, has been a shadow of its former self for years. But why? The answer, according to Turkish contractor Erdem Yilmaz, lies not in the recent legal dispute, but in financial issues that have been brewing for years.

From Glory Days to Ghost Town

Shoreline, located in the heart of Paceville, was once a beacon of Malta’s tourism industry. It opened its doors in 2005 with much fanfare, promising a luxurious experience that would put Malta on the map. But fast forward to 2022, and the complex is a shell of its former self. The hotel has been closed for years, and the apartments stand empty, their once vibrant balconies now adorned with weeds.

Yilmaz’s Revelations

Erdem Yilmaz, a Turkish contractor who worked on the Shoreline project, has shed light on the financial struggles that have plagued the complex since its inception. In an exclusive interview with Hot Malta, Yilmaz revealed that the project was beset with financial issues from the start. “The project was always underfunded,” he said, “The investors just didn’t have the money to finish it properly.”

Yilmaz also revealed that the project was plagued by delays and cost overruns. “We were always behind schedule and over budget,” he said, “It was a recipe for disaster.”

The Legal Dispute

The recent legal dispute between the Shoreline’s owners and the Malta Developers Association (MDA) has brought the complex’s financial woes into the spotlight. The MDA is seeking €10 million in unpaid fees, alleging that the Shoreline’s owners have failed to pay for services rendered. However, Yilmaz insists that the financial issues predate the legal dispute.

“The owners have been struggling to keep the project afloat for years,” he said, “The legal dispute is just the latest in a long line of problems.”

What’s Next for Shoreline?

The future of Shoreline remains uncertain. The complex is currently up for sale, but with its financial woes and legal disputes, it’s unclear who would want to take it on. The MDA has expressed hope that a new owner could turn the complex around, but Yilmaz is less optimistic.

“Shoreline was always a troubled project,” he said, “I don’t see that changing anytime soon.”
