Social Housing Applications Surge: PN Blames Government Failure
Queue Snakes Around St. Elmo as Social Housing Applications Surge
MALTA – The Nationalist Party (PN) has slammed the government, claiming its failure to address housing affordability has led to a surge in social housing applications. The stark reality? Long queues snaking around St. Elmo Palace, the Office of the Prime Minister, as desperate Maltese citizens seek help to secure a roof over their heads.
Applications Skyrocket: A Sign of the Times
Figures obtained by Hot Malta reveal a staggering 35% increase in social housing applications this year compared to the previous one. The most affected? Young couples and families struggling to break into Malta’s overheated property market. “I’ve been working full-time since I was 18,” says 27-year-old Maria from Msida, “but I can’t afford a place of my own. I’m tired of living with my parents.”
PN Blames Government Inaction
PN spokesperson, Ryan Callus, argues, “The government’s failure to implement effective housing policies has pushed many Maltese to the brink. They’re left with no choice but to rely on social housing, which is already stretched thin.” He adds, “We need a comprehensive plan that tackles affordability, not just supply.”
The government, however, maintains that it’s doing its part. A spokesperson for the Ministry for Social Accommodation and Reform Institutions counters, “We’re working tirelessly to increase social housing stock. But demand is outpacing supply. We need time to catch up.”
Meanwhile, the queues outside St. Elmo continue to grow. The government’s housing crisis is no longer just a statistic; it’s a tangible reality for many Maltese. It’s time for action, not just words.
