Drug Bust in Birkirkara: Two Arrested, €50K Worth of Drugs Seized
In an early morning raid, two men were arrested in the quiet, residential area of Birkirkara, Malta, as police seized a substantial amount of drugs and cash. The bust, which took place at around 6:00 AM, through the usually peaceful neighborhood, leaving residents stunned and concerned.
Operation ‘Sunrise’ Unfolds
Codenamed ‘Operation Sunrise’, the operation was the result of months of surveillance and intelligence gathering by the Malta Police Force’s Drug Squad. The targeted residence, a seemingly ordinary terraced house on Triq l-Imqabba, was transformed into a hive of activity as officers in riot gear swarmed the property, armed with search warrants.
Neighbors, awakened by the commotion, watched from their windows and doorsteps as police vehicles blocked the narrow street. “I’ve never seen anything like this here,” said a surprised Maria, a long-time resident who wished to remain anonymous. “It’s usually so quiet, you can hear a pin drop.”
Drugs and Cash Seized
Upon entering the house, officers discovered a cache of illicit substances, including cocaine, cannabis, and ecstasy, with an estimated street value of over €50,000. They also seized a significant amount of cash, believed to be the proceeds of drug sales. The two suspects, both Malta residents aged 35 and 42, were arrested on the spot and taken into custody for questioning.
Superintendent Joseph Muscat, leading the operation, stated, “This is a significant blow to drug trafficking in Malta. We’re sending a clear message that we won’t tolerate this kind of activity in our communities.”
Community Reactions and Concerns
The arrest has sparked conversations among Birkirkara residents, with many expressing relief that the police have taken action but also voicing concerns about the presence of drugs in their neighborhood. “I’m glad they caught them,” said Tony, a local shop owner, “but it’s worrying to think this was happening right under our noses.”
Local councillor, Michael Falzon, echoed these sentiments, “We need to ensure our communities are safe. I urge anyone with information about such activities to come forward and report it to the police.”
