Malta Two arrested for suspected drug trafficking

Drug Trafficking Bust in Msida: Two Arrested, Substantial Drugs Seized

Early morning raids in the quiet streets of Msida yesterday left two men in handcuffs and police seizing a substantial amount of suspected drugs. The arrests, made by the Malta Police Force’s Drug Squad, have through the usually peaceful residential area, known more for its historic architecture than criminal activity.

Drugs and Cash Seized in Msida

The operation, which took place at around 6:00 AM, targeted two residences on Triq San Pawl and Triq L-Imqades. Neighbours, who prefer to remain anonymous, described the scene as “chaotic” with police vehicles blocking the narrow streets and officers in tactical gear entering the properties. The raids resulted in the seizure of an estimated 1 kilogram of suspected cocaine, 500 grams of suspected cannabis, and a significant amount of cash believed to be proceeds from drug trafficking.

Arrests and Charges

The two arrested individuals, a 32-year-old Maltese man and a 35-year-old foreign national, are currently being held at the police headquarters in Floriana. They have been charged with trafficking in drugs and are expected to appear in court soon. Superintendent of Police, Mario Portelli, confirmed the arrests and seizures, stating, “This operation sends a clear message that we will not tolerate drug trafficking in our communities.”

Community Reaction and Local Impact

While the arrests have been welcomed by the local community, many residents have expressed concern about the growing drug problem in Malta. “We’ve always known that drugs are a problem, but to see it happening right on our doorstep is frightening,” said a long-time Msida resident. The local council has vowed to work closely with the police to ensure the safety of the community and to address any potential drug-related issues in the area.

Police Operation and Investigation

The operation was the result of an extensive investigation by the Drug Squad, involving surveillance and intelligence gathering. Superintendent Portelli praised the work of the officers involved, stating, “This is a testament to their dedication and commitment to keeping our streets safe.” The investigation is ongoing, and police are not ruling out further arrests.
