Lucky Escape: Tree Collapse Closes Attard Road
Tree Tumble: Close Call on Attard’s Triq l-Imqabba
Imagine this: you’re driving down Triq l-Imqabba in Attard, the sun is shining, and you’re enjoying the scenic countryside. Suddenly, a towering tree, uprooted by heavy rain, comes crashing down onto the road. This wasn’t a scene from a Hollywood disaster movie, but a real-life drama that unfolded last week, leaving two drivers with a lucky escape.
Rain’s Fury Unleashed
Heavy rain, a common sight in Malta’s unpredictable weather, was the culprit behind this near-miss. The downpour, which lasted for several hours, was enough to dislodge the mature tree, sending it crashing onto the road. The tree, estimated to be over 50 years old, was uprooted from the side of the road, where it had stood as a landmark for decades.
“I’ve driven past that tree hundreds of times,” said Joe, a local resident who witnessed the incident. “It’s always been a symbol of Attard’s rural charm. I never thought it would come crashing down like that.”
Lucky Escape for Drivers
The two drivers, both local residents, had a narrow escape. The first driver, Ms. Maria Azzopardi, was driving her small hatchback when the tree came crashing down. “I saw it in my rearview mirror,” she recalled, “I tried to speed up, but it was too late. The tree hit the back of my car, but I managed to swerve out of the way just in time.”
The second driver, Mr. Stephen Camilleri, was driving a larger SUV. “I saw Maria’s car swerve, and then I saw the tree. I tried to stop, but there was nothing I could do. The tree hit my car, but thankfully, it didn’t cause any serious damage.”
Both drivers walked away with minor injuries and were treated at Mater Dei Hospital. Their cars, however, were not so lucky. Both sustained significant damage and had to be towed away.
Cleanup and Lessons Learned
The incident led to the closure of Triq l-Imqabba for several hours while the tree was removed. The local council, with the help of the Armed Forces of Malta, worked tirelessly to clear the road and ensure it was safe for traffic again.
In the aftermath, many locals are questioning whether more could have been done to prevent the incident. “We’ve had heavy rain before, and the tree never came down,” said one resident. “Maybe it’s time we started checking these things more regularly.”
Malta’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has since announced that they will be conducting a review of all trees along major roads to ensure their safety. They have also reminded the public of any damaged or potentially dangerous trees.
