Malta’s PM Backs Ireland’s EU Presidency: Unity in Diversity

Maltese PM’s Stance on Irish Presidency: A Beacon of Unity

Standing on the bustling Republic Street in Valletta, Malta’s Prime Minister, Robert Abela, recently echoed his support for Ireland’s upcoming presidency of the Council of the European Union. But what does this mean for Malta and its European neighbours?

Ireland at the Helm: A New Chapter

From January 2023, Ireland will take the reins of the EU presidency for the first time since 2004. This six-month term, held in a rotating system among EU member states, is a chance for Ireland to shape EU policy and steer the bloc’s direction. And Malta’s PM is all for it.

“We look forward to working closely with Ireland during their presidency,” Abela stated, standing against the historic backdrop of the Grandmaster’s Palace. “Their presidency will be beneficial not just for Ireland, but for all Europeans, including Maltese citizens.”

Malta’s Stake in the EU Game

Malta, a small island nation, punches above its weight in the EU. With a population of just over 500,000, it’s one of the bloc’s smallest members. Yet, it’s no stranger to influencing EU policy. Malta’s strategic location in the Mediterranean has long made it a crucial player in EU migration and security policies.

Abela’s support for Ireland’s presidency is a testament to Malta’s commitment to EU unity. “We’re all in this together,” Abela said, reflecting on Malta’s EU journey. “From joining the EU in 2004 to today, we’ve seen firsthand how a united Europe can drive progress and prosperity.”
