Michael Farrugia Steers Farsons into the Future
In the heart of Malta’s industrial hub, at the iconic Farsons Brewery in Mriehel, a new chapter unfolds. Michael Farrugia, a name long associated with the local beer giant, has taken the reins as the new CEO. But who is Michael Farrugia, and what does his appointment mean for one of Malta’s most beloved brands?
From Brewing Roots to the Corner Office
Michael Farrugia’s journey to the top is a testament to the power of hard work and dedication. Born and bred in Malta, Farrugia’s roots run deep in the brewing industry. His father, Joseph, was a long-serving employee at Farsons, instilling in Michael a love and respect for the craft from a young age. After completing his studies, Farrugia joined Farsons in 1997, starting from the bottom as a brewery operator.
Over the next two decades, Farrugia climbed the ranks, honing his skills and gaining valuable experience in various roles. He served as Operations Director for eight years before being appointed as Chief Operating Officer in 2018. Now, in 2022, he takes over from Norman Aquilina, who stepped down after 12 years at the helm, to become the new CEO.
A New Era for Farsons
Farrugia’s appointment comes at a time of significant change for Farsons. The company is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year, marking a century and a quarter of brewing excellence in Malta. As the new CEO, Farrugia inherits a rich legacy but also faces the challenge of navigating the company through an ever-evolving market.
One of Farrugia’s first tasks will be to continue the company’s expansion into new markets. Farsons has already made significant strides in this area, with its beers now available in over 20 countries. Farrugia’s international experience, gained during his time at the company’s UK operations, will be invaluable in this regard.
Sustainability is another key area that Farrugia will focus on. Farsons has already implemented several eco-friendly initiatives, such as the installation of solar panels at its brewery and the introduction of recyclable packaging. Farrugia aims to build on these efforts, further reducing the company’s environmental footprint.
: The Future of Maltese Brewing
Michael Farrugia’s appointment as CEO of Farsons is more than just a changing of the guard. It’s a testament to the power of homegrown talent and a vote of confidence in the future of Maltese brewing. As Farrugia takes the helm, he does so with a deep understanding of the company’s history and a clear vision for its future.
In his own words, “Farsons is more than just a brewery. It’s a part of Malta’s cultural heritage, and I’m honoured to have the opportunity to lead it into the next chapter. Our focus will be on continuing to brew high-quality beers while also innovating and adapting to the changing market. We’ll do this while staying true to our Maltese roots and our commitment to sustainability.”
