Michael Farrugia Steers Farsons into the Future
In the heart of Malta’s bustling Msida, the iconic Farsons Brewery hums with activity, but today, it’s not just the machinery that’s shifting into a new gear. Today, Michael Farrugia steps into the role of CEO, taking the helm of one of Malta’s most recognised and historic brands.
From the Ground Up
Farrugia’s journey to the top is a testament to the Maltese spirit of hard work and perseverance. Starting as a management trainee straight out of university, he’s spent two decades climbing the ranks, learning every aspect of the business from the ground up. “I’ve seen Farsons evolve and grow,” he says, “and now, I’m excited to help shape its future.”
A New Chapter for a Classic Brand
Farsons, established in 1928, is more than just a brewery. It’s a Maltese institution, a staple at local bars and restaurants, from the bustling streets of Valletta to the quiet corners of Gozo. Farrugia’s appointment comes at a time when the company is looking to build on its rich history while embracing the future.
“We’re not just about beer anymore,” Farrugia explains. “We’re about creating experiences, about bringing people together. Whether it’s through our beers, our food, or our events, we want to be a part of Malta’s social fabric.”
: Sustainability and Innovation
Farrugia is no stranger to the challenges facing the beverage industry, from sustainability concerns to the rise of craft breweries. But he’s also aware of the opportunities. “We’re seeing a growing demand for locally sourced, sustainable products,” he says. “And we’re ready to meet that demand.”
Under Farrugia’s leadership, Farsons is looking to invest in renewable energy sources and reduce its environmental impact. It’s also exploring new product lines, from craft beers to non-alcoholic beverages, to cater to a changing market.
But despite the changes, some things will remain constant. “Farsons is about more than just business,” Farrugia says. “It’s about community, about tradition, about Malta. And that’s something we’ll always hold onto.”
