Malta Breakaway Catholic sect defies Vatican again by ordaining bishops

SSPX Defies Vatican Again with Bishops’ Ordination in Malta

In the heart of Rabat, Malta, the sun beat down on the cobblestone streets as a small crowd gathered outside the ancient St. Paul’s Cathedral. They weren’t there for a typical Sunday mass, but to witness a defiant act that has through the Catholic Church. The breakaway sect, the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX), was about to ordain new bishops, once again challenging the Vatican’s authority.

An Unyielding Stance

The SSPX, founded by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in 1969, has a long history of defying Rome. They reject the Second Vatican Council’s reforms and adhere to the traditional Latin mass. In 1988, Archbishop Lefebvre ordained four bishops without Vatican approval, leading to his excommunication. Now, his successors are repeating the act, despite Pope Francis’ warnings.

Father John Doe, a local SSPX priest, explained, “We remain faithful to the traditional Catholic faith and the mass of all time. We cannot accept the novelties introduced after Vatican II, which have led to a crisis in the Church.”

Malta’s Role in the Drama

Malta, with its strong Catholic heritage, has been a stage for this drama. The SSPX has a significant following here, with several chapels and a seminary in the village of Żurrieq. The island’s conservative Catholic traditions resonate with the society’s teachings. Bishop-elect Peter Smith, ordained in Żurrieq, sees Malta as a beacon of traditional Catholicism.

“Malta’s deep Catholic roots make it a natural home for our society,” he said. “We hope to continue serving the Maltese people, providing them with the unchanging faith and liturgy they cherish.”

The Vatican’s Response

The Vatican has been swift and stern in its response. A spokesperson for the Holy See stated, “The ordination of these bishops without mandate from the Pope is a schismatic act. We pray for the return of these priests and their followers to full communion with the Church.”

However, the SSPX shows no signs of backing down. They argue that it’s the Vatican that has strayed from tradition, leading to a crisis of faith and morals. They point to declining Church attendance and scandals as evidence of their stance.

Father Doe remains undeterred, “We will continue to ordain priests and bishops to ensure the survival of the traditional faith. We invite all Catholics who share our concerns to join us in this fight for the true Church.”
