Tree Collapse: Close Call on Attard Road
Tree Tumble: Close Call on Attard’s Triq l-Imqades
It was a scene straight out of a disaster movie, but thankfully, no Hollywood-style tragedy unfolded on a quiet Attard road yesterday. A massive tree, its roots no match for a sudden gust, came crashing down onto Triq l-Imqades, narrowly missing two drivers who had mere seconds to react.
Witnesses Recall the Moment
Joseph Camilleri, a local resident, was walking his dog when he heard the ominous creaking. “I looked up and saw the tree swaying,” he recalled. “Then, it was like slow motion. The tree just gave way and came crashing down.” Camilleri quickly alerted the drivers, who managed to swerve just in time.
Maria Azzopardi, one of the drivers, was still shaken when we spoke to her. “I saw the tree falling out of the corner of my eye,” she said. “I hit the brakes and steered away. It was so close, I could feel the branches brushing against my car.”
Cleanup and Lessons Learned
The road was quickly cordoned off, and the tree was cleared by the local council within hours. However, the incident has raised questions about the maintenance of trees along Malta’s roads. “We need to ensure that our trees are healthy and well-maintained,” said Attard’s mayor, Paul Buttigieg. “We’ll be inspecting all the trees along our roads to prevent such incidents in the future.”
While the cleanup was underway, the two drivers were left to count their blessings. “I’m just grateful I was able to react in time,” said Azzopardi. “It could have been so much worse.”
