Tree Collapse in Attard: A Close Call for Commuters

Tree Tumble: A Close Call on Attard’s Triq San Girgor

Early morning commuters in Attard had a narrow escape today as a towering tree came crashing down onto Triq San Girgor, one of Malta’s busiest thoroughfares. The incident, which occurred around 7 am, could have been catastrophic, but for the fortunate timing and quick thinking of those involved.

Scene of the Collapse

Triq San Girgor, a major artery connecting Birkirkara and Attard, was brought to a standstill as the large tree, uprooted by heavy overnight rain, sprawled across the road. The tree, a mature eucalyptus, was one of several lining the street, planted decades ago to provide shade and beauty to the bustling road.

Witnesses reported that the tree came down with a loud crack, blocking both lanes of traffic and narrowly missing two vehicles. “I was driving to work when I heard this massive noise,” said Joseph, a Birkirkara resident. “I looked in my rearview mirror and saw the tree coming down. I swerved just in time to avoid it.”

Lucky Escape for Drivers

The two drivers, both employees at nearby companies, had a lucky escape. Their vehicles, though damaged, were parked safely on the pavement, away from the path of the falling tree. “I’m just grateful I wasn’t a few seconds earlier,” said one of the drivers, who wished to remain anonymous. “I could have been right under it.”

No injuries were reported, but the incident could have been much worse. The tree, estimated to be around 30 years old, was uprooted from its base, its roots exposed like a giant, twisted hand reaching out from the earth.

Cleanup and Aftermath

Traffic police and local council workers were quick to respond, closing the road and beginning the cleanup operation. By mid-morning, the tree had been cut into manageable sections and removed, allowing traffic to flow again. The road, however, was left with a large hole where the tree once stood, a stark reminder of the morning’s drama.

This incident has raised questions about the maintenance of trees along Malta’s roads. While many appreciate the greenery they provide, there are concerns about their safety, especially during heavy rain or strong winds. The local council has assured the public that they are reviewing their tree maintenance policies in light of this incident.
