Tree Collapse in Attard: A Close Call for Two Drivers

Imagine, if you will, the scene on Tuesday afternoon in the heart of Attard. The sun was beating down, and the usual hum of traffic filled the air. Suddenly, without warning, a large tree came crashing down onto the road, narrowly missing two vehicles and causing chaos.

Crash Landing: A Tree’s Tumble

The tree, a sturdy and long-standing resident of the area, decided it had had enough of its roots holding it in place. It chose the busiest part of the day to make its grand exit, collapsing onto Triq San Girgor, one of Attard’s main thoroughfares. The road, a vital artery connecting Birkirkara and Rabat, was suddenly blocked, sending shockwaves through the afternoon commute.

Witnesses described the scene as one of sudden stillness, followed by a flurry of activity. “I was driving home from work,” said one eyewitness, “when suddenly, everything just stopped. The tree came down with a thud, and it was like time stood still for a moment.”

Miraculous Escape: Drivers Dodge a Falling Giant

Miraculously, no one was injured in the incident. The two drivers, who were mere meters away from the falling tree, managed to swerve out of the way just in time. “I saw it coming down in my mirror,” said one of the drivers, still shaken by the ordeal. “I hit the brakes and turned the wheel. It was close, really close.”

The other driver, who wished to remain anonymous, echoed these sentiments. “I couldn’t believe it. One moment I was driving along, and the next, I was dodging a falling tree. It was surreal.”

Both drivers were understandably shaken but walked away unharmed. Their vehicles, however, were not so lucky. Both sustained significant damage, with one car’s roof being crushed by the weight of the fallen tree.

Aftermath: Clearance and Questions

The road was quickly cordoned off by the police, and the Army was called in to help clear the fallen tree. It took several hours to remove the tree and reopen the road to traffic. Commuters were left to find alternative routes, causing delays and frustration.

Questions have been raised about the state of the tree and how such a collapse could have occurred. The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) has launched an investigation into the incident. “We are looking into the matter,” said a spokesperson for MEPA. “We want to ensure that such an incident does not happen again.”

In the meantime, residents and commuters are left to ponder the fragility of life and the unexpected events that can disrupt our daily routines. As one local resident put it, “It’s a reminder that nature can be unpredictable, and we should always be prepared for the unexpected.”
