Tree Collapse in Attard: A Lucky Escape for Drivers

Tree Tumble: A Close Call on Attard’s Triq San Pawl

Imagine driving down Triq San Pawl in Attard, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows, when suddenly, the road ahead starts to move. Not in the way it should, but in a way that sends your heart racing. That’s exactly what happened to two drivers yesterday, as a towering tree came crashing down, blocking the road and narrowly missing their vehicles.

Witnessing Nature’s Fury

Eyewitnesses described the scene as a “monster from a horror film” rising from the ground. The tree, a centuries-old carob, uprooted itself with a groan, its massive trunk and sprawling branches blocking the entire width of Triq San Pawl. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Joe, a local resident who prefers not to reveal his last name. “One minute it was standing there, the next it was lying across the road.”

Lucky Escape and Swift Response

The two drivers, both locals, had a lucky escape. “I saw it happening in my rearview mirror,” said Maria, a 45-year-old teacher from Mosta. “I slammed on the brakes, and the tree missed my car by inches. I’m still shaking.” The other driver, a 55-year-old man from Birkirkara, was equally shaken but unharmed.

Within minutes, the Attard local council was on the scene, along with the police and emergency services. They worked swiftly to clear the road, using heavy machinery to cut the tree into manageable sections. “We’re lucky no one was hurt,” said Mayor Mario Cutajar. “We’ll be investigating the cause of the uprooting and taking steps to ensure the safety of our roads.”

This incident serves as a reminder of the power of nature and the importance of regular maintenance of our public spaces. It’s also a testament to the quick response of our local authorities and emergency services.

As for the carob tree, it’s a sad end to a plant that was likely over a hundred years old. But as one local put it, “Nature has a way of starting again. We’ll plant a new tree, and in a few decades, it’ll be as grand as this one was.”
