Malta Donates €140,000 to Venezuela Earthquake Victims

Malta’s Heartfelt Response: €140,000 for Venezuela’s Earthquake Victims

In the heart of Valletta, at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, officials are busy finalising details for a €140,000 donation to Venezuela. This significant sum is Malta’s immediate response to the catastrophic earthquakes that have left thousands of people homeless and in desperate need.

Malta’s Connection to Venezuela

Malta’s connection to Venezuela runs deep. With a significant Maltese diaspora in the South American country, the recent earthquakes have hit close to home. Many Maltese families have relatives and friends affected by the disaster, making Malta’s response a personal one.

Malta’s Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Evarist Bartolo, expressed his sympathies, “Our thoughts are with the Venezuelan people during these difficult times. We stand in solidarity with them and hope that this contribution can make a difference.”

How the Funds Will Be Used

The €140,000 will be channelled through Maltese humanitarian organisation, Malta Red Cross, which has extensive experience in disaster relief. The funds will be used to provide immediate aid, including food, water, and medical supplies, to those most affected by the earthquakes.

Malta Red Cross Secretary General, Martin Galea, explained, “We’re working closely with our Venezuelan counterparts to ensure these funds reach those most in need. Our priority is to provide immediate relief and support the recovery efforts.”

Malta’s donation comes as part of a wider European Union (EU) response. The EU has pledged €1.5 million in humanitarian aid to support those affected by the earthquakes. Malta’s contribution reflects its commitment to the EU’s humanitarian principles and its role as a responsible member state.

Malta’s History of Humanitarian Support

Malta’s response to the Venezuelan earthquake is just the latest in a long line of humanitarian efforts. From providing aid to Syrian refugees to supporting relief efforts in the aftermath of natural disasters, Malta has a proud history of stepping up in times of crisis.

In fact, Malta’s response to the Venezuelan earthquake is reminiscent of its response to the 2015 earthquake in Nepal. Then, Malta donated €100,000 to support relief efforts, demonstrating its commitment to international humanitarian aid.

As Malta continues to of global politics and humanitarian crises, it remains steadfast in its commitment to providing aid where it’s needed most. The €140,000 donation to Venezuela is a testament to this commitment.
