Malta’s Venezuelan Community Unites in Earthquake Relief
Malta’s Venezuelan Community United in Solidarity
In the heart of Malta’s bustling Msida, the scent of arepas wafts through the air, carrying with it a sense of unity and resilience. Here, in the small Venezuelan community, the echoes of the devastating earthquakes that struck their homeland a week ago still resonate. But instead of despair, there’s a shared determination to help.
From Msida to Caracas
Malta’s Venezuelan community, though small, is tightly knit. They’ve watched in horror as news from home paints a grim picture. The death toll nears 2,000, with thousands more injured and countless homes reduced to rubble. The quakes have left a trail of destruction, and the search for survivors continues.
Back in Msida, the community is rallying. “We’re not just here to survive,” says Maria, a local shop owner. “We’re here to support each other and those back home.”
Local Efforts, Global Impact
Maria’s shop, ‘Arepas Venezuela’, has become a hub for the community’s relief efforts. A collection box sits by the counter, filled with donations from customers. “Every cent counts,” Maria says, her eyes reflecting the gravity of the situation.
But the community isn’t just relying on donations. They’re also using their skills and resources to make a difference. A group of local chefs is preparing meals for those affected, while others are using their networks to coordinate the delivery of aid.
Meanwhile, the Maltese government has pledged €100,000 in aid. “We stand in solidarity with the people of Venezuela,” says Minister for Foreign Affairs, Evarist Bartolo. “We’re doing all we can to support the relief efforts.”
Back in Msida, the community continues to hope and help. “We’re a long way from home,” says Maria, “but we’re not powerless. We can make a difference, here and now.”
