Malta’s Venezuelans United in Quake Relief Efforts
Malta’s Venezuelan Community United in Solidarity
In the heart of Valletta, at the bustling Strada Reale, the scent of fresh bread from the bakery mingles with the aroma of strong coffee from the nearby café. It’s a typical morning in Malta’s capital, but today, there’s an unusual sense of unity and purpose among the Venezuelan community gathered here. They’re not just starting their day; they’re preparing to search for survivors in their homeland, thousands of miles away.
From Malta to Venezuela: A Tale of Two Quakes
One week ago, two devastating earthquakes struck Venezuela, claiming nearly 2,000 lives and leaving thousands more injured or homeless. The tremors, measuring 5.8 and 5.9 on the Richter scale, reduced buildings to rubble and across the country. In Malta, the Venezuelan community watched in horror, their hearts heavy with worry for loved ones back home.
Malta’s Venezuelan community, numbering around 500, is tightly knit. Many arrived in Malta as students or workers, drawn by the island’s educational opportunities and strong economy. Now, they find themselves united in a common cause: to help their homeland in its hour of need.
Searching for Survivors: Malta’s Venezuelans Take Action
Within days of the quakes, the community sprang into action. They organized, fundraising efforts, collecting supplies, and coordinating with local authorities and NGOs. The Maltese government, recognizing the community’s urgency and expertise, has offered its support, providing a space at the Hal Far Open Centre for the collection and storage of donations.
Among the volunteers is Maria Rodriguez, a 32-year-old architect who moved to Malta five years ago. “We’re not just sending aid,” she says, “We’re sending hope. Hope that we haven’t forgotten them, that we’re doing everything we can to help.”
Back in Venezuela, the search for survivors continues. The task is daunting, with aftershocks hindering rescue efforts and heavy rain turning rescue sites into muddy quagmires. But Malta’s Venezuelans remain undeterred, their resolve strengthened by the outpouring of support from the Maltese public.
